The intellectual property industry is a mess, but there are some clear guidelines you can use when you’re looking for a new lawyer.
In a post titled “What are the best and worst cases of intellectual property lawsuits?”
, lawyer Michael Zegers laid out his top five scenarios, including cases where it’s clear that the person suing is infringing on your work or intellectual property.
If you’re a big fan of the music industry, you’ll probably want to get in touch with an intellectual property attorney.
And if you’re an artist, you may want to take a look at the services offered by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), which is one of the biggest trade groups in the industry.
“In the music, you can hire an attorney for example, to get the rights to your music or your song, or to get a record contract,” Zegars attorneys explained in the post.
“You can get the record contracts signed, or you can get them delivered.”
Zegers points out that while the RIAA may be the largest industry group, there are many other companies that can provide intellectual property law services, and those other companies have the resources and expertise to deal with these types of cases.
For example, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has a blog devoted to covering intellectual property cases.
In his post, Zegrs also recommends looking for an attorney that specializes in copyright, trademarks, or patents.
These are the types of situations where an attorney can help you navigate the complicated legal landscape.
The other four types of lawsuits are the same ones listed above: copyright infringement, trademark infringement, false advertising, and trademark counterfeiting.
If these are your top five, the attorney will likely have a few different approaches to dealing with the situation, so it’s important to get that advice before you hire them.
But if you can identify one that works, it’s worth asking if there’s anything else you can do to make sure you don’t end up in a similar situation.
